An AI-Powered recruitment platform for tech sales

Overview

During my summer internship, I worked on a 0-1 project to develop a B2B SaaS web product to support sales role recruitment. We developed MVP features that enable users to holistically and visually assess candidates' technical and soft skills based on role requirements.

Impact

The beta version was launched in October 2023.

Delivered 3 MVP features, focused on generative AI and data visualization.

Why sales? What's special about it?

01

Sales is an essential function for tech startups, contributing to revenue and product success

Research shows that a strong sales teams can potentially increase total revenue by 2.5 times faster than those without. This emphasizes the high demand of securing top sales talent quickly for growth and market entry.

Problems at hand

Despite its importance, our customers lacked hiring support for sales roles

Sales hiring faces a few unique challenges. For our customers, who are startups and small-to-medium-sized businesses, it is especially crucial to ensure confidence & efficiency in the hiring process to ensure initial success

Soft-skills evaluation

Sales relies heavily on soft skills, which can be hard to grasp in an interview

Research summary

01

01 Low efficiency

Writing evaluations takes too much time and effort

"We want to secure sales because the right talents are hard to get in a competitive market.”

02 Analysis support

Soft skills evaluation lacked concreteness

Users reported feel doubtful at times when relying on experiences and intuition to assess soft skills. This created opportunities to boost confidence in hiring decision, potentially leveraging interview recordings and other data as the basis of analysis and evaluation.

03 AI trust

Unsure if we can trust AI recommendation in hiring

“I don’t know if the evaluation from AI is trustworthy and accurate. To address this, the key is user trust.

Define data

01

Define the core skills to evaluate from hiring experts

From user interview, we identified 6 core skills that recruiter and startup CEOs look for in an sales candidate. These include communication, result-driven, domain knowledge, problem-solving, sales experience, and resilience.

Visualize data

02

Utilize the right visualization graph to help employer answer two questions

When assessing an candidate, there are two big questions employers need to answer.

First, is this person my top choice among all applicants?

First, employers want to hire the best applicant, and need to know the how current candidate perform compared to other people or the average. I explored the type of chart that is used to compare values across categories.

Bullet chart is not suitable as there is no pre-set target value for skillset and interview performance

A multi-column bar chart is the ideal choice as it is used to compare values across, which can be used for candidate v.s average

Second, what are their personal strength & weakness?

Next, employeer may wish to understand a candidate deeper. What areas are they best at? What are they lacking at? I look for the type of chart that offers an intuitive and holistic view of one's various capabilities.

A bar chart separates each skill into individual bars, making it harder to see the overall balance and relationships between different skill sets

A radar chart visually integrates multiple skill dimensions in a single view, allowing for easy comparison

Learnings from designing for SaaS B2B

Alignment of user and business goals

Clearly identify our customers and deeply understand their needs and pain points was vital for aligning our design solutions with business goals.

Prioritization through cross-team collaboration

Navigating constraints became a key part of my design process, as it defines what we can do and what approach to take. Constraints can change throughout the project, so regular check-ins with product owners kept me agile, allowing us to adapt quickly to changes and ensure our designs stayed relevant and impactful.
